Lent 2018 – Theological College’s annual tradition of collecting diapers for the needy in the D.C. area providentially fell at the outset of the Lenten season this year. Competing class-by-class, the men strove to “out diaper” their upper and lower classmates, collecting a total of nearly 95,000 diapers for needy children and families. Once again, the men far exceeded the previous year’s collection tally – GoFundMe appeals, Facebook drives, outreach to local parishes and businesses, appeals to family and friends, and large personal donations all contributed to the final tally. Last year’s competition netted well over 46,000 diapers, while in 2016 the total was 18,359, 200% above the 2015 amount. Chairmen Jacob Gruber (1-T, Pittsburgh) and Julian Ehiem (1-T, Washington) had their hands full coordinating the heated competitions and the influx of diaper deliveries. In first place, the second theologians collected 32,000 diapers, earning them the Golden Diaper Award. Second place went to the fourth theologians, with 29,000 diapers, and third place went to the Basselin scholars for 16,000 diapers. The rented U-Haul was barely able to accommodate its cargo, delivered to the Greater DC Diaper Bank, run by Corinne Cannon, who once again acknowledged that TC’s donation was the single largest donation ever received, and will cover the better part of a month’s diaper needs for area families.
